The World is a big place, we all know it. Who has experienced it though? Growing up, the majority of the people that surround us have been told to follow a certain order. Go to school, go to college, get a job, settle down, retire. Simple, right? Even though it’s a beautiful scenario, there’s little things that occur during those phases in life that makes life beautiful.
Dananjaya Hettiarachchi an award winning public speaker says, “I See something in you, but I don’t know what is”. “I see something in you, but I don’t know what it is”, what a profound saying. It got me thinking about what is in me that others see but I can’t see myself?
When oil prices crashed, the Calgary job market took a turn for the worse and in early 2016 I was no longer working at the Bank. I had no sense of direction of what I wanted to do, where I saw myself in the future or what the future held for me. Was I scared? Of course. When you’re lost, it’s very hard to pick yourself up and take the next step. You’re unsure that if you reach out you might not know what the future might hold for you, but that’s the first step, reaching out.
When I took the first step, I had recognized that there is no need to be afraid. I had plenty of guidance around me, but I still did not know what to do! So, I studied anything that could be useful for me. I always had a passion for computers and always wanted to work in a field that showcased all my abilities. I indulged myself in a plethora of technical courses that I believe would be useful in the future. I studied until I was confident that I could practically apply my skills. Today, I can confidently say that I’m in a position where I am not lost. With the help of friends, family, and the support of my peers, I work in a field that I enjoy and I’m in a much better position. The studying and learning never stops, in fact there’s always something new to learn to help become a better individual in both my personal and professional life.
Throughout my experience, I finally saw something, that it’s okay to be scared. Being scared isn’t a weakness, it’s a sign to tell you where you can grow, all you should do is take the first step. The steps never end but the more you walk, the more experiences will come forward, and when you look back, you can say to yourself that everything will be okay. Now that I am in a comfortable position in my professional life, I can spend time on more of my hobbies and activities that I had not been able to do before and focus on myself as an individual. Who knows, there might be other things about me that others see, but I don’t know what they are, and that’s okay, all I need to do is take the next step.
